This is a screenshot of part of my research today. Though I'm editing my blog posts, I'm still finding that I have some questions and therefore, I end up doing a little bit more research along the way.
Today's long shift was all about editing my two blog posts. One of the notes I received from my small group cohort leader is to bring a little bit more life into my writing. Yes, I'm writing about pirates and I need to report the facts about their lives, but I also need to think about my experiences after reading about theirs. I found this to be a bit challenging in the beginning. I supposed it's because I'm so used to academic writing that infusing a bit of "me" in the writing seems opposite of what I usually do. I had to reread my blog posts several times, refer back to my sources, and then back to my blog posts. I also tend to work quickly so I forced myself to slow down and take in the stories in a new way. Doing this allowed me to get some impressions of the sources that I didn't really have before.
One of my sources was very old and used old English, not just in the language but in the writing printed in the book as well. I focused on this because I found the writing fascinating. After re-reading the source, I found myself getting into a groove and my brain just accepted the old English, as opposed to struggling with it during my initial research weeks ago. I decided to do a little bit of digging into what this writing was. It had to do with typography and what was popularized by a publisher. All that aside, I felt myself transported back to the 1700s when I re-read my source. This was particularly helpful to give my blog posts a bit more "life" and to connect with my readers, whoever they will be.
