This is a screenshot of my second small group meeting. This time there were three of us interns with our mentor Judy.

Every quarter, we have a small group meeting with our assigned mentor. The last meeting I had, there were only 2 of us interns, because our schedule conflicted with the majority of the group. Judy is wonderful and accommodating, she set aside a meeting just for us. At this meeting, there was an intern I had never met before, so it was good to meet her and hear about her progress. For this meeting, we basically went around and gave a status update on our research and blog project. For  me, I let them know that I only have a few outside sources (secondary sources) but have several sources to focus on in the piracy trials collection. I also  told them I'd like to do a deep dive search to identify historical law - what the U.S. laws were on piracy around the 1700s and 1800s as well as international law. Also, I spoke about my experience thus far of all the webinars I've participated in.

Judy gave really good input. I feel like she has such a unique perspective, having been a volunteer twice with the Law Library of Congress. She encouraged all of us in our research, especially to be creative and find new angles into the collection. She also told us to make sure we look at secondary sources. These should have bibliographic information that we can look at for their sources, like laws. I made sure to make a note of her advice! Judy gave us some next steps - we need to send her an outline. It can even more an introductory paragraph or a rough draft. The earlier we get it to her, the better, so she can provide us with feedback. We can also reach out to her any concerns we have about our writing. Lastly, I noted that we should list the questions we're trying to answer in our project. Scholarship builds upon other works. For me, who is my audience? How will I get my reader excited about this topic? How will it led them further into the piracy trials collection and beyond?

I ended up shift by working on my to-do list for the weekend/week ahead, reviewing the updated summer enrichment schedule and doing my weekly check-in email to Jennifer.
