This is a screenshot of the resume clinic I attended. It's good to see some familiar faces I've encountered over the course of my internship!
I was very excited to attend this webinar. Even though I'm years into my professional journey, it's never too late to learn, especially when it comes to jobs! We had two hosts at this webinar, Kimberly Powell who is the Human Resources Director at the Library of Congress and Kelly McKenna, an assistant in HR. In the webinar, we learned how to develop the vantage point of the hiring manager when we're evaluating our resume, how to identify important areas to focus on when updating our resume, how to write accomplishments instead of duties/tasks and understand why this is important, how to understand the value of a career binder and base resume and how to tailor a resume for each job description. In thinking about a resume, it is important to think about the conventions of the industry you are in and what you are looking to get into. During the webinar, we learned that a resume is not to get us a job, but to get us an interview. A hiring manager spends an average of 20 seconds looking at a resume so we have a very short window of opportunity to get their attention.
One of the things I mentioned above is a career binder - this can be hard copy or digital. The purpose of having one is to keep a current record of every document that will supplement your career journey. It should have a base resume (which is a one-stop document to keep track of every relevant position, accomplishment, and competency but also to showcase your hard and soft skills), job descriptions (past, current and wish list), recommendation letters, reference contact information and tailored resumes. We also had an exercise where we inputted one accomplishment into the chat and then we learned how to tweak it so that it is truly an accomplishment and not a duty or task. This was super helpful! Other things that I really felt were important was to make sure to research an organization that I'm interested in, note their mission, identify key aspects and skills of the role, and prioritize my most relevant skills and experiences to create my tailored resume. At the end of the webinar, there was a Q&A - the hosts were so kind in answer the interns' questions. They have a lot of valuable information to share, not just in their job, but in their own career journeys.
